Police Services Satisfaction - Performance Measure 1.07

It is extremely important for the Tempe Police Department to provide high quality police services. This helps increase the trust of citizens and enhances and builds positive relationships between Police employees and community members; and helps us work together to address crime in the city. The City of Tempe collects data from an annual Community Survey to ensure we are accomplishing this priority.

Measure

Achieve ratings of "Very Satisfied" or "Satisfied" with the "Quality of Local Police Services" greater than or equal to the top 10% of the national benchmark cities as measured in the Community Survey.

Why this Measure Matters

This measure matters to ensure the Police Department is achieving the goal of building positive relationships and working with the community members to deliver effective strategies to reduce crime in Tempe through courteous and respectful interaction with citizens needing law enforcement services no matter how positive and negative the situation may be.

Baseline

81.4% (CY 2016)

Target

93% annually, by calendar year (Based on 2023 benchmark)

Strategies
  1. Provide employees with customer service training and "Fair and Impartial Policing" training. Tempe PD has secured a DOJ Grant to study de-escalation training and its affects. This grant and subsequent training strives to improve police-citizen encounters/contacts and reduce use of force and citizen complaints.
  2. Enhance positive interactions by attending community meetings with citizens (e.g., neighborhood associations, public events and schools of all age groups).
  3. Publicize efforts and successes through media outlets like Facebook,, Twitter, website, and traditional television new stations.
