Student Support Satisfaction - Performanc Measure 1.35

The City of Tempe is dedicated to supporting young people facing crises or trauma. CARE 7 Youth Specialists, part of the City of Tempe's Community Health and Human Services Department, offer interventions to calm and stabilize youth in crisis, linking them with ongoing assistance. Helping Tempe students manage crises and build coping strategies enhances their self-reliance and reduces negative childhood experiences.

Measure

Achieve an annual satisfaction rate greater than or equal to of 95% from students receiving assistance from CARE 7 Youth Specialists as measured by participant surveys.

Why this Measure Matters

The City of Tempe is committed to supporting Tempe Youth. The CARE 7 Youth Specialist program offers interventions to calm and stabilize youth in crisis, linking them with ongoing assistance. CARE 7 Youth Specialists are an integral part of the Student Support Teams in the Tempe Union High School District and select Tempe Elementary School District schools. The immediate access to supportive services and connection to school resources allow students and their families to receive low-barrier services at no cost. These trusted adults on each campus help students with adverse childhood experiences, which, in turn, helps students grow into adults who can problem-solve and cope with stressful situations. This collaboration between the school districts and the city allows both entities to leverage one another to better serve young people and their families in safe school settings. In addition, having Youth Specialists trained to respond to crises on school campuses minimizes the need for the CARE 7 Crisis Response Team to be dispatched to schools. This allows the CARE 7 Crisis Response Team to be available to respond to 911 calls with the Tempe Police and The Tempe Fire Department.

Strategies

Strategy #1

Increase the number of planned interactions from 9,932 to 12,000 by 2027 so that students can engage with youth specialists during non-crisis periods through individual and group support during the school year. Students engaging with the Youth Specialists will have opportunities to problem-solve with a trusted adult, adapt coping strategies, and connect to resources. This strategy will help decrease the need for crisis intervention services and connect students to supportive resources to help mitigate stressors.

Action Plan:

  • After their initial meeting, Youth Specialists and students will create a plan for ongoing support. The student and the Youth Specialists will determine the frequency of individual support meetings based on the student's needs (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, as needed). Every student who seeks Youth Specialist support will create a plan with the Youth Specialist for ongoing services.
