Worry About Being a Victim - Performance Measure 1.10

The Tempe Police Department is committed to addressing both crime and fear of crime. It is important to ensure citizens and visitors of our City feel safe when in Tempe. Fear of crime is one way in which we think about our personal safety and it can be addressed through crime prevention education and increased visibility of police throughout the City.

Measure

Achieve ratings of "Never" and "Rarely" for those who responded that they worry about "a) being victimized by a robbery/physically assaulted; b) being burglarized when not there; c)being attacked or threatened with a weapon; d) having car stolen or broken into; or, e) being a victim of identity theft" greater than or equal to the Gallup Poll benchmark as measured by the Community Survey.

Why this Measure Matters

There are many ways to look at fear and assessing people's feeling of how likely they are to become a victim captures their sense of risk in their community. This is more specific than an overall perception of safety and can provide an effective measure of the service the Police Department is providing in keeping fear low. It is important to measure how citizens feel likely to become a victim of a crime to ensure the police department is achieving its primary purpose of working with the community members to deliver effective strategies to reduce crime and the fear of crime in Tempe.

Baseline

Being victimized by a robbery/physically assaulted: 66.2% (CY 2017)
Having your home burglarized when you are not there: 44.3% (CY 2017)
Being attacked or threatened with a weapon: N/A (CY 2017)
Having your car stolen or broken into: 45.4% (CY 2017)
Being a victim of identity theft: 31.9% (CY 2017)

Target

Being victimized by a robbery/physically assaulted: 70% annually, by calendar year
Having your home burglarized when you are not there: 57% annually, by calendar year
Being attacked or threatened with a weapon: N/A annually, by calendar year
Having your car stolen or broken into: 57% annually, by calendar year
Being a victim of identity theft: 30% annually, by calendar year

Strategies

1. Maintain visible police presence, as much as possible, throughout Tempe. Respond to citizen call-for-service in a timely and professional manner. Proactively look for suspicious activity and provide proactive patrols in areas of high crime and traffic frequency.

2. Continue the department's monthly crime suppression meetings to review crime statistics and develop strategies to address crime trends and reduce crime in targeted areas.

3. Meet with and educate the community on ways to prevent crimes.
